The LifeSpring Science Advisory Board includes physicians, dietitians, food scientists and pharmacologists from some of the leading universities and institutions in the world. The Board works to create product development guidelines based on the latest clinically-proven nutrition science and provides input and guidance to our nutrition strategy.

Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D.
Associate Director/Senior Scientist and Chief of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Center on Aging, Tufts University.

Dr. Blumberg is Associate Director/Senior Scientist and Chief of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Center on Aging at Tufts University. His research efforts are focused on the biochemical basis for the role of antioxidant nutrients and their dietary requirements in health promotion and disease prevention during the aging process via their modulation of oxidative stress status.

Dr. Blumberg has published over 120 scientific articles and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Tufts Diet and Nutrition Letter, Journal of Nutritionally Immunology, Journal of Environmental Pathology, Toxicology and Oncology, Nutrition in Clinical Care, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, and Journal of Nutrition for the Elderly.

Dr. Blumberg received Bachelor of Science Degrees in Pharmacy and Psychology in 1969 from Washington State University and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1974 from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He received postdoctoral training in cyclic nucleotide metabolism at the Tennessee Neuropsychiatric Institute and the University of Calgary.


Sharon Bortz, M.S., R.D.
Private practice, Dietary Counselor

Sharon has helped develop the nutrition guidelines and nutrition labeling information for the LifeSpring products. Most recently, she co-authored The Diabetes Weight Loss System. She currently contributes to the Diabetes Wellness Letter for the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation, and writes a monthly nutrition column for the Redwood Health Club in Ukiah California. She received her M.S. degree from Columbia University in Applied Physiology and Nutrition, and is a registered dietitian.

After her education, she was a research dietitian at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention as well as the Human Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston. There she worked with Miriam Nelson, Ph.D., investigating the effects of strength training on the bone density of post-menopausal women. Part of the study included a weight loss component, in which Sharon designed and taught a weight loss program specifically for older women. In addition to her work on the study, Sharon contributed to the authorship of a manual for a health club catering to people over 50.

Pharmacologist Joe Graedon is a best-selling author, nationally syndicated newspaper columnist, award-winning syndicated radio talk show host and lecturer at the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy.

He received his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University in 1967 and went on to do research on mental illness, sleep and basic brain physiology at the New Jersey Neuropsychiatric Institute in Princeton. In 1971, he received his M.S. in pharmacology from the University of Michigan.

Following his medical anthropologist wife Teresa to Mexico, he taught clinical pharmacology to second year students at the University of Oaxaca. While in Mexico, he started work on The People's Pharmacy (St. Martin's Press, 1976; revised 1985), a popular book on medicines that would eventually go on to become a New York Times number one best seller.


Clare Hasler, Ph.D.

Dr. Hasler is the executive director of the Functional Foods for Health Program at the University of Illinois. Established in 1992, this is the nation's principle program dedicated to studying the role of naturally occurring food components in preventing disease and promoting the development of food products that have health benefits. She also serves as an assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy.

Dr. Hasler has participated in national policy discussions on functional foods and has presented the results of her research at dozens of conferences worldwide. She is also a member of the American Association of Cereal Chemists and of the Institute of Food Technologists. Before being appointed to her current positions, Dr. Hasler was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute and she received her dual Ph.D. in Human Nutrition and Environmental Toxicology from Michigan State University.


Stephen Inkeles, M.D., M.P.H., F.A.C.N.

Dr. Inkeles is a board certified internist who provides medical consultation in his specialized areas of clinical nutrition, lipid disorders, cardiovascular risk assessment and modification, and diabetes management. He is also board certified by the American Board of Nutrition, and is one of only a few hundred physicians in the nation to be double board certified in both Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition.

Dr. Inkeles is the Director of Clinical Nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Santa Monica, CA; and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine in the Department of Medicine's Division of Clinical Nutrition. He is a member of the American College of Physicians and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis.

Dr. Inkeles has been involved with LifeSpring on an ongoing basis, playing a key role in determining nutrition requirements for the target chronic disease states. He will be involved with product development and with the development of the professional tier marketing programs and communicating the link between the product and disease state management.


Stan Bernard, M.D. , M.B.A.
Stan Bernard, MD, MBA is the Founder and President of Bernard Associates, an eHealth business consulting firm dedicated to enhancing the performance and value of online and offline companies that market innovative content, products, services, or technologies in the eHealth space. Bernard Associates focuses on "executive agenda" issues, including business plan development, strategic planning, business development, strategic alliances/partnerships, marketing, and financing.

Dr. Bernard is nationally recognized as a health care Internet and industry consultant, speaker, and author. He writes a monthly column "Health e-Trends" for the publication Internet Health Strategies. He is credited with identifying and coining the term the "Care Space" to describe a fourth eHealth segment for web-based care services. Dr. Bernard serves as a Board member, panel chairman, and website judge for the eHealthcare World Conference. Dr. Bernard founded and served as the first Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Disease Management, the first peer-reviewed clinical and business journal in the field. He is also the recipient of the first A.T. Kearney Global Intellectual Capital Award for his work in disease management.

Previously, Dr. Bernard served as a Principal in the Health Care and Pharmaceutical Industry Practice at A.T. Kearney, a leading global consulting firm and division of Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Prior to joining A.T. Kearney, Dr. Bernard worked at Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Company where he held several executive business and medical positions. He served as U.S. Product Manager for the launch of the cholesterol-lowering drug Pravachol, the first Bristol-Myers Squibb pharmaceutical product ever to exceed $100 million in any worldwide market in its first year of sales. He served as U.S. Managed Care Medical Director, the first person to hold such a position in the pharmaceutical industry, and as U.S. Director-Pharmacoeconomics, where he initiated and directed Bristol-Myers Squibb's health/disease management initiatives. Previous positions included those in Worldwide Business Development, U.S. Medical Operations, and U.S. Medical Services.

Dr. Bernard also served as a Senior Consultant for Mediq Healthcare Resources where he provided consulting services to hospital systems and physician group practices. Since 1992, Dr. Bernard has served as an Expert Consultant to the U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR).

Dr. Bernard received his M.B.A. in marketing and health care management from the Wharton School of Business. He received his Medical Degree from Baylor College of Medicine and is a licensed general practitioner.
